ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

The Art of Good Medicine — The Art of Mel Hofmann

When you are in a gallery, museum or installation, you feel the curated distinction. Mel Hofmann’s Berkeley, California work space and centre of healing creates that atunity with selective placement and intuitive direction.

Mel Hofmann’s fine art and living body of healing work is renewable, giving of itself, and positively stimulating points and connections.

The hand work and intention resonate beyond the moment of visual connection. I think that could be called healing vibration.

I can testify that Mel’s in-person healing sessions conduits the same warmth and purposeful channel of energy that the visual work emanates.

Call and Response

Mel Hofmann’s Fine Art far extends from the bordered reality of film and photography into the uncharted mystical magnificent path of Self and Healing. The work calls you to respond. And the response is as individual as the participant.

Mel’s background in art is vast. Academically and actively. “Studying first at the Instituto Allende in Mexico when I was 19 years old. I received my BFA in Textiles from California College of the Arts in 1996 when I was 40.”

The textures of visuals and textiles has long been a partner in creating a communication system within the medium. Fabrics, paper, color, line, pattern, selections, and applications are some of the seen tools from the art box.

It’s the unseen that you, for yourself, will be able to describe. This is a moveable traveling staging system that you unfold, as needed.

Mel’s work is on many album covers, and in many publications, including The Fiber Arts Design Book (2014).

The work has exhibited in group and solo shows through The Bay Area, California, and nationally. The work has been projected in many venues, including Sweets Ballroom in Oakland (2000).

Currently enjoying working with the mediums of “photography, video and visual journaling.” Music plays a big part in the process, Mel “enjoys working with musicians”, often “collaborating with other artists to create video work by combining their musical abilities with my visual art and editing skills.”

Obsession

Sacred Journeys.

Focusing now on the tangible side of the realm and Spotlighting an incredible set of cards like no other. The Sacred Journey Medicine Cards. If the abstract awareness can be guided, this is how it’s done.

The work excels at giving you much to do, see and hear, at the same time giving you space to be, be in, and — to be ready. That’s grace, heart and soul.

Much like in an orchestra of sound (in a symphony of your own ideas) Mel Hofmann’s work is a conductor, of peaceful space. Introducing gentle movements from where you are now. Instruments of suggestion and direction, playing and resting at different intervals.

The wisdom and wordings in the cards are aesthetically organic wayfindings, for in each of us is our own map for that Sacred Journey.

Regarding the inspiration to begin and finish a creative project, Mel says, “I used many of my existing journal pages and photographs to create my deck of Sacred Journey Medicine Cards. This project kept my attention for quite some time between creating the imagery for the 54 cards and writing the 80 page booklet. I was inspired to finish it so that I could publish the deck and to start getting it out into the world.”

Uncarved Block.

The set of arrangement in the cards are a gateway or a portal, where you can choose to be in the middle ground of invitation, until the moment is right to shift. A sculpted guidance towards getting back to being the “uncarved block” that Buddhists describe. It’s a suggestion. To remember.

With all credit due to whose hands and humble genius made all the pieces, put them in order and used the tools with precision. It’s not from Mel Hofmann to you. It’s yours already. From the center.

That’s the offering. For you to receive. An opening. It’s tangible in the Sacred Healing Journey Deck. It’s vibrantly active in live sessions.

Towards an energy, in these delicate framings — that declares itself unbiasedly — for you to observe, obtain or pass. Your senses are immediately alive, calmer, and induced by the tones Mel Hofmann’s visual work gathers — by how it is designed and artfully presented.

Like a shamanic doula at a birth, offering wisdom and complete presence so you can let-go fully into the moment, while feeling safe. Ideally you’ll be so in it, you won’t even know they are there, and, this is important: it won’t fetter your own conducting energy.

The Moment.

The Sacred Journey Medicine Cards hold within them a container, that is useful, purposeful, positive, beautiful, and if I may, economical. They are, after all, a collection of limited edition fine art prints that have been curated with care.

“These Medicine Cards offer a gentle awakening.”

Meditate on what you read for yourself. You may see something familiar in say…the colors of Atlantis, the core of the Sun, or your own Sacred Journey.
